Great Monster Movies on DVD by The Things in the Basement

Pete's Neon © 2009 by Drew Jackson

We enjoy monster movies -- since we don't get out much. They keep us entertained so that we don't toy with the humans too much and get whipped by the master.

A monster movie is different than a horror movie. We don't like slashers and maniacs, or anything else that is too real. We prefer fun horror movies that usually include monsters and a lot of adventure.

Please allow us to recommend a top ten list of titles that you may not have seen that we think are fun.

#10 Relic/Mimic

We couldn't chose between these two movies. My right head likes one while my left head likes the other. Hey, cut us some slack, we're things in the basement.

Both are fun movies with lots of adventure in the sewers (yum).

#9 13 Ghosts

It has the Monk guy. We love him. Besides that, it's a genuinely scary ghost movie. Checkout these other Dark Castle releases: House on Haunted Hill, Ghost Ship, and House of Wax.

#8 Dawn of the Dead

Classic fun at the mall. Romero was a genious. He must have also been a zombie himself. Of course, the original Night of the Living Dead is a real hoot too, but its more scary and less fun than this one.

#7 Invasion of the Body Snatchers

We like the original and the first remake, but enough already. The last two remakes were terrible. Yet another classic. Besides, black and white movies scare us and remind us of the dark at the back of the closet (where we live).

#6 John Carpenter's The Thing

The original was good, but this was way more fun. This movie was very dark and blue. We like dark and blue. Other Carpenter movies are fun too, especially shlock like The Fog.

#5 30 Days of Night

Nasty vampires, not nice, Eurotrash, romantic vampires.

#4 Tremors

It's just down right fun to watch giant worms eat people. Good writing, good acting, good monsters. The sequels got successively worse but are still worth watching.

#3 Resident Evil

Of course we're referring to the entire series. Evil, corporate zombies take over the world. Cool!

#2 Constantine

Constantine is simply cool, and he smokes. Again, good story and great acting.

#1 Lake Placid

The best monster movie we ever stole. Its funny and exciting and had a giant crocodile.

That's it. Damn, we forgot Fright Night. And what about the Prophecy and Underworld series? Oh well, better luck next time.
